“Steppin’ Out” is an album that is different than any other I have done in the past. I usually have other musicians with me, but this time I’m all alone. I wanted to do some old tunes of Tommy Jackson; he was a great fiddler from ‘The Cherokee Cowboys’. So I sat down and thought, what will I do? I started with Acorn Hill. I layed down a fiddle track, then a bass track, a couple of rhythm guitar tracks, some harmony fiddle and then some pickin’ on the old guitar. I even slapped a little rhythm and a little pickin’ on my fiddle. I didn’t have a plan, I was just wingin’ it and the tune just seemed to come together. So I moved on to other tunes that I used to play years ago from the Tommy Jackson era. Then I thought, maybe I should play some western swing ‘cause I just love that kind of music too, so I found an old tune and started building. Hey, let me tell you, I sure had fun playing and arranging these old tunes.
Then I even wrote some tunes that would fit into this style. “The Myhres”, are the father and son team of Alfie and Byron, two real good fiddlers and friends of mine from Sherwood Park, Alberta. Alfie plays Tommy Jackson tunes real good; in fact, he introduced me to this southern style of fiddling and Byron is one heck of a bluegrass fiddler so I thought this tune fit them perfectly. The “Skin Boy Rag” is for my brother Terry (that’s his nickname) and he likes western swing music. Bob Wills has the Fat Boy Rag; I got the Skin Boy Rag. The “Coyotpractor” was written for my brother Randy. When he was a young’un, we called him the coyote, ‘cause he was always on the go, only came home when it was time to eat. He is now a chiropractor in Texas. “Ron’s Swing” is for Ron Horrocks of Nova Scotia who likes swing music. He plays guitar and accordion and he’s quite an entertainer. I first met Ron in Ottawa and he has become a good buddy of mine.
The rest of the tunes are just great old tunes that you don’t hear too much anymore. I hope you enjoy this recording, I had a blast “Steppin’ Out” of the norm. Calvin Vollrath
